Day 13, 31 de Deciembre 2008 Barrio, San Telmo

It’s Wednesday morning, New Years Eve on the way to school. The entrance is on a small very narrow street which I paced off to be 32 feet from the face of a building on one side to the face of a building on the other side. The side walks are 5 feet +/- each leaving 22 feet of street from the curb on one side to the curb on the other. Sounds like a lot of room until you see a fully loaded commute bus (colectivo) belching diesel exhaust  traveling 40 plus MPH alongside a parked car with pedestrians on either side. It is very impressive and happens all the time.

The picture below doesn’t do justice to what it’s like to see in person:

We finally figured out that the school staff always shows up on time on Monday A.M. when each new class arrives, but the rest of the week....¿Quien sabe?…Who knows?.

Chris made use of the wait time by studying….. I screwed around taking pictures.

That’s the elevator shaft to the left of Chris. The elevator itself is similar to all elevators in the older buildings in B.A., an open air cage within an open air shaft.

Around 2:00 P.M., after class, we gathered for another get together for New Years. More champagne, sandwiches and New Years toasts. Several of us decided to gather in Barrio San Telmo around 9:00 P.M. (early for here) which is less than a mile from the school for a New Years get together. We settled on a Bar Dorrego, on the corner across the street from Plaza Dorrego. The picture below is the group: clockwise from Alan & Chris is Cordelia, a U.K. resident living in Holland, two other afternoon students from Holland whose name we’ve forgotten, Christo from Switzerland and Karine fromFrance.

Cordelia was leaving early in the morning on a flight to Nicaragua and was worried about making sure that she didn’t miss the flight. Chris and I noticed that she wasn’t worried enough that she declined an invitation to party. Christo had his backpack with credit cards and money stolen the week before and was in the recovery process. Here are Christo and Karine deliberating over a bottle of champagne just before midnight.

This is Karine pouring

.

We were worn out after midnight and headed out to catch a collectivo back to our barrio. Afetr leaving the bar we decided to hail a cab. Christo and Karine headed off to an all night party somewhere.

Happy New Year

Ciao from Buenos Aires.

Alan & Chris
